Louisville, KY (June 18, 2025) — A fatal motorcycle accident in Hardin County claimed the life of a 47-year-old man on Monday afternoon, June 16, according to local officials.
The incident occurred in the 2600 block of Hardinsburg Road near Cecilia, prompting a response from deputies with the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office. The crash involved two vehicles and took place along a stretch of KY 86.
Joseph Poddom, a resident of Eastview, was traveling westbound on his motorcycle at the time of the collision. Emergency crews responded swiftly and transported Poddom to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
An 83-year-old woman from Cecilia, who was driving the second vehicle, was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Her injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the crash to determine how it unfolded.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Every day, fatal motorcycle accidents leave families across Kentucky grieving and searching for answers. From the winding rural roads of Hardin County to high-traffic corridors like I-64 and Dixie Highway, motorcyclists face a heightened risk of serious—and often deadly—collisions. With minimal protection compared to other vehicles, riders are especially vulnerable when crashes occur. Tragically, Kentucky sees hundreds of motorcycle fatalities each year, with speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield among the most common causes.
Motorcycle accidents are often caused by drivers who simply don’t see or respect the presence of riders on the road. A driver turning left without checking blind spots, merging without signaling, or texting behind the wheel can instantly change—or end—a motorcyclist’s life. Nationwide, more than 5,000 motorcyclists die in crashes annually, and too many of these deaths could have been prevented.
