Burkesville, KY (August 29, 2025) – A deadly crash in Cumberland County has left one Indiana man dead and another facing serious charges, including vehicular homicide, according to Kentucky State Police.
Troopers were called to KY 485 Sulphur Creek Road around 9:40 p.m. on August 28 after reports of a single-vehicle wreck near the entrance to the Sulphur Creek Marina parking lot.
Investigators say a 2014 Ram 2500 pickup, driven by 66-year-old Ronald Huser of Lebanon, Indiana, veered off the right side of the roadway, plunged down a steep embankment, and slammed into a tree.
A passenger in the truck, 65-year-old Douglas Johnson, also of Lebanon, was rushed to Cumberland County Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Another passenger, 38-year-old Mallory Larson, was airlifted from the hospital to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious injuries.
Police say Huser declined medical treatment at the scene. He was later charged in connection with the fatal crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Across Kentucky, deadly car crashes remain an alarming concern for drivers on both interstates and rural backroads. From high-traffic routes like I-75 near Lexington to winding two-lane stretches in small towns, collisions claim lives every year and leave lasting scars on families and communities.
The impact of a fatal accident extends far beyond the crash itself. Surviving loved ones are left to cope with profound grief while also navigating the heavy financial toll that often follows. Funeral costs, medical expenses, and the sudden loss of income can overwhelm families already struggling with heartbreak.
Tragically, many of these deadly crashes could have been avoided. Speeding, distracted driving, impairment, and reckless choices continue to rank among the leading causes of roadway fatalities across the state.
Kentucky law allows families to pursue justice when negligence plays a role in a fatal collision. Wrongful death claims can hold drivers—and, in some cases, employers or other responsible parties—accountable while providing financial support to help ease the burdens left behind.
