Louisville, KY (September 3, 2025) – A tragic crash on Interstate 265 in Louisville early Monday morning, September 1st, claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl and left her mother and younger sibling with life-threatening injuries.
According to Louisville Metro Police, the collision happened just after 2:30 a.m. near New Cut Road in the northbound lanes of Gene Snyder Freeway.
Officers said a Dodge Durango, driven by 34-year-old Renaldo Gill, slammed into the back of a Jeep Compass carrying a woman and her two children. The impact caused the Jeep to overturn, cross the median, and land in the southbound lanes.
The driver, identified as Jasmine Simpson, was ejected from the Jeep and taken to UofL Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her 4-year-old child was also critically injured after the baby seat was thrown from the vehicle. The 12-year-old passenger was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Gill at the crash site. Officers reported he showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking. His blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit. Investigators also found marijuana and a gun in his vehicle.
Gill now faces multiple charges, including murder, assault, wanton endangerment, DUI, and criminal mischief. A judge raised his bond to $500,000 during an arraignment hearing.
The Louisville Metro Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate this devastating incident.
