Wolfe County, KY (October 8, 2025) – Two people died, and four others were injured on Tuesday afternoon, October 7, following a devastating crash on the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway, according to the Kentucky State Police.
The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. near the 47-mile marker when a Town and Country minivan traveling east crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Hyundai Elantra. The minivan carried two occupants, while the Elantra had four people inside, including two young children.
State police confirmed that 56-year-old Robbin Burchett of Paintsville, a passenger in the minivan, and 27-year-old Katelyn Harmon of Salyersville, a passenger in the Elantra, both died from their injuries.
Emergency crews transported the driver of the Elantra and a 9-year-old girl from the same vehicle to Morgan County Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital in West Liberty. Both remain in critical condition.
The 2-year-old passenger in the Elantra sustained minor injuries and was listed in stable condition. The minivan’s driver was taken to St. Claire Regional Medical Center, where they received treatment for minor injuries.
Troopers closed portions of the parkway for several hours as they conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage.
The Kentucky State Police continue to investigate what caused the minivan to cross the center line, resulting in this tragic head-on collision.
Our hearts go out to the families of Robbin Burchett and Katelyn Harmon, and we extend our deepest condolences to all affected by this tragedy.

Head-on collisions like this often lead to catastrophic injuries and fatalities due to the severe force of impact. These types of crashes are among the deadliest roadway incidents across Kentucky, particularly on rural highways where vehicles often travel at higher speeds.
Many serious car accidents in Kentucky occur because of driver distraction, fatigue, speeding, or unsafe passing on two-lane roads. Crossing the center line, as in this case, is a frequent cause of fatal collisions. Other contributing factors may include mechanical failure, impaired driving, or poor visibility.
When families lose loved ones in crashes like this, they may have the right to pursue justice through a wrongful death claim. These claims allow surviving relatives to seek compensation for the emotional, financial, and personal losses caused by another driver’s negligence. Compensation may cover funeral costs, medical expenses, lost income, and the pain of losing a loved one.
Families dealing with these heartbreaking circumstances often need guidance from an experienced wrongful death lawyer. Skilled attorneys can investigate the accident, gather evidence, and handle negotiations with insurance companies to ensure fair compensation. Legal support also helps families focus on healing while their lawyers fight for justice on their behalf.
