Lexington, KY (November 28, 2025) - Firefighters responded to a Thursday evening, November 27, duplex fire in Lexington, according to officials from the Morehead Fire Department. Officers said crews received the first reports at around 8:30 p.m. The fire broke out at a duplex on Brothers Way while people were still inside the home.

Residents acted quickly when they noticed the danger. Everyone in the duplex managed to get out safely before firefighters arrived. Emergency crews reached the scene soon after the call and began working to control the flames.

One person suffered smoke inhalation. Medical teams treated the victim. No other injuries were reported, and officials did not say whether anyone needed hospital care. Firefighters stayed on site to check for remaining hot spots and to make sure the structure was safe from further flare ups.

Authorities have not shared what caused the fire. The investigation remains open.

We hope the injured individual fully recovers.

House Fire in Kentucky Injuries Reported in Duplex Fire on Brothers Way

A duplex fire can spread fast because two homes share walls, attic space, and sometimes utilities. Even a small flame can fill rooms with smoke in minutes. The good news in this case is that everyone escaped, but smoke inhalation can still cause serious injuries. Families often deal with emotional shock, temporary housing needs, and the cost of replacing basic items after a holiday fire.

Several conditions can contribute to duplex fires without blaming the people who live there. Possible reasons include:

  • Cooking heat or kitchen equipment can spark a fire during busy holiday meals.
  • Older wiring or overloaded circuits can create hidden electrical hazards.
  • Heating systems or space heaters can ignite nearby materials if they run too hot.
  • Shared walls and connected attic areas can let fire travel between units quickly.
  • Smoke can spread through stairways and vents, making escape harder in tight layouts.

After a fire, victims may face medical bills for breathing treatment, follow up visits, and medication. They may also need help with temporary lodging, clothing, or replacing damaged property.

In some cases, families may have legal options if negligence by a property owner, contractor, or product maker contributed to unsafe conditions. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer can help residents understand whether they can seek compensation for losses beyond what insurance covers.

A lawyer can review fire reports, look at maintenance records, and help preserve evidence while investigators work. This matters because the cause often determines whether a claim exists and which insurance policies apply. Legal support also helps families avoid signing quick settlements before they know the full cost of recovery and rebuilding.
